Why Leadership Camp Changed Everything — And Why You Need to Be There This Summer

Some weekends you forget. This isn't one of them.

Every year, a group of high school athletes from across the Denver metro packs their bags, heads into the forest, and comes back different. Not just a little different — genuinely, unmistakably transformed. That's what Leadership Camp does. And if you've been on the fence about signing up for 2026, keep reading.

More Than Just a Camp

Leadership Camp isn't your average summer getaway. It's an overnight retreat designed specifically for 9th–12th grade FCA Huddle leaders — athletes who want to be more than just good players. Athletes who want to lead their teams, influence their campuses, and live out their faith in a way that actually matters.

The weekend is built around a simple but powerful idea: God has called you to lead — and you can learn how.

Through intentional teaching, honest conversations, and real community with other student athletes, campers walk away with a vision for what leadership actually looks like — on the field, in the locker room, and beyond.

What Last Year's Campers Experienced

Words only go so far. Watch for yourself.

Last year's camp was something special. Student athletes arrived as individuals and left as a community. They challenged each other, encouraged each other, and discovered that the best leaders aren't the loudest ones in the room — they're the most faithful.

The stories that came out of that weekend reminded us exactly why we do what we do at South Denver FCA. Young men and women stepping into who God made them to be. That's the mission.

And the impact doesn't stop when camp ends — it's really just getting started.

The whole point of Leadership Camp is to send students back to their schools ready to lead. This past year, we saw that play out in a big way. Huddles across the south Denver metro didn't just grow — many of them doubled or even tripled in size during the school year. Not because of a program or a push from staff, but because students who attended camp went back to their campuses on fire. They invited friends, showed up consistently, and created a culture that others wanted to be part of.

That's what leadership does. It multiplies. One student with a vision and the tools to lead can change the entire temperature of a team or a campus. Leadership Camp exists to be that catalyst — and this year proved it works.

The Setting Makes It Even Better

Leadership Camp 2026 takes place at Ponderosa Retreat Center in Larkspur, CO — a stunning retreat nestled in the forest that feels a world away from everyday life. The venue is more than just a backdrop. It's an experience.

God Is Moving in South Denver: 2025 Ministry Highlights & Growing Opportunities

As 2025 comes to a close, we’re taking time to pause and reflect on the incredible ways God has been moving through South Denver FCA . From student-led huddles to campus outreach to coaches finding renewed community, this has been one of the most impactful years we’ve experienced across our schools.

Whether you’re a parent, volunteer, coach, pastor, or supporter, we want to say thank you. Your prayers, encouragement, and partnership are a huge part of every story shared below.

Here are some of the ways lives have been transformed across South Denver this year.

Huddles Are Growing — And Student Leaders Are Leading the Way

One of the biggest reasons FCA huddles exploded in growth this fall is because our leadership team intentionally launched and equipped student leaders to step into influential roles on their campuses.

And the impact has been powerful.

Across South Denver schools we’ve seen:

Students confidently leading devotionals and prayer
Packed classrooms filled with athletes opening God’s Word
Young leaders inviting friends, teammates, and entire groups
Students taking ownership of their huddles with boldness and joy
Coaches supporting and encouraging these student-led moments

This student-led momentum has created an explosion of involvement , deepened spiritual conversations, and opened doors for FCA on multiple campuses. When students lead, schools change—and this year proved it.

Fields of Faith 2025: A Powerful Move of God

This October, Fields of Faith once again became a catalytic moment for students across South Denver. Hundreds gathered to worship, hear testimonies, and respond to the Gospel.

But the most exciting part wasn’t the event itself—it was the follow-up.

We saw:

New FCA huddles forming
Students plugging into local churches
Teens stepping into leadership roles
Long-term discipleship beginning as a direct result

God is writing stories that go far beyond one night. Fields of Faith continues to be a launching point for long-term spiritual growth and student leadership.

Coaches Are Finding Strength, Support, and Community

Coaches are some of the most influential leaders in our communities, and this year we saw many of them deepen their faith, build new relationships, and receive the encouragement they need to lead well.

Through 1-on-1 discipleship, team visits, and our growing Coaches Ministry , coaches across South Denver found:

Renewal in their walk with Christ
Community with other coaches
Encouragement in the challenges of leadership
A safe space to discuss life, family, and faith

Their spiritual growth is shaping locker rooms, families, teams, and entire school cultures.

A Year Marked by Open Doors Across South Denver Schools

One thing has become unmistakably clear in 2025:

More schools, more coaches, and more athletes are asking for FCA than ever before.

Our staff has been covering a lot of ground—launching huddles, supporting student leaders, discipling coaches, and responding to new campus opportunities. The growth has been incredible. But it’s also outpaced the size of our team.

We are seeing:

Schools requesting FCA huddles for the first time
Coaches asking for more discipleship support
Student leaders stepping up faster than we can train them
Multiple campuses inviting FCA to play a bigger role

God is opening doors faster than we can walk through them.

God Is Moving in South Denver: Fields of Faith Aurora + Littleton

What We Witnessed at Fields of Faith

Across two incredible nights in Aurora and Littleton, we saw God move in ways that only He can.

Each community — from Aurora to Littleton — has its own story, heartbeat, and needs. Yet what unites us across South Denver FCA is even greater: lives being changed by Jesus . He’s moving in powerful ways through student-athletes, coaches, parents, and local churches , transforming schools, huddles, and families all throughout our communities. Just as He knows each of us personally, He’s working uniquely in every heart and every neighborhood across South Denver.

Two Nights, One Mission

The photos below are from both Fields of Faith nights — and you can see the unique ways God is moving in each area.

From stadium bleachers filled with students to prayer circles forming on the field, from coaches praying over their teams to 16 baptisms celebrated under the lights , every moment pointed to one thing: Jesus being made known and glorified.

Across Aurora and Littleton combined, we witnessed:
✨ 30+ first-time decisions to follow Jesus
✨ 100+ students rededicating their lives to Christ
✨ 16 baptisms — each one a public declaration of new life in Him

✨ Over 600 attendees — student athletes, coaches, parents, and volunteers!

A Community United

These nights reminded us that when students, parents, coaches, churches, and volunteers come together, God does extraordinary things. Schools partnered. Churches prayed. Volunteers served faithfully. And student-athletes boldly shared their faith with friends and teammates.

It’s a picture of the body of Christ at work — each part playing its role, each community reflecting His glory in a unique way. And yet, together, painting a beautiful story of unity across South Denver.

Humbled and Grateful

We are humbled to witness this kind of movement. And we want to pause to say thank you — to every supporter, prayer partner, and volunteer who makes moments like these possible.

Because of your faithfulness, student-athletes across South Denver are encountering Jesus and carrying His love back into their schools, teams, and families. Lives are being transformed — not just for a night, but for eternity.

Together, we are seeing a Kingdom impact that will ripple far beyond these fields.

Fellowship of Christian Athletes Unites Arapahoe, Douglas, and Denver Counties Under New Regional Name: South Denver FCA

DENVER, CO (September 1, 2025) — The Fellowship of Christian Athletes (FCA) is excited to announce the official launch of South Denver FCA , a unified region that now encompasses Arapahoe, Douglas, and Denver counties. This merge marks a new chapter of expanded impact, deeper community, and a shared vision to reach more coaches and athletes with the transforming power of Jesus Christ.

For years, FCA has been active across the greater Denver area, hosting Huddles, camps, and outreach events in local schools and communities. As ministry has grown, leaders recognized the opportunity to better serve the region through collaboration and shared resources. South Denver FCA will bring together teams, tools, and hearts under one mission — to lead every coach and athlete into a growing relationship with Jesus Christ and His church.

“This isn’t just a name change — it’s a movement,” said David Farmer, South Denver FCA Multi-Area Director. “By joining forces across counties, we’re becoming more effective in how we disciple coaches, reach campuses, and equip young leaders to live boldly for Christ.”

South Denver FCA now supports dozens of Huddles across middle schools, high schools, and clubs, with a growing network of staff, volunteers, and partner churches. The new region reflects both the breadth of FCA’s reach and the depth of its relationships across South Denver.

This summer was nothing short of amazing for South Denver FCA. From adaptive sports to leadership development, staff retreats, and community-wide events, God has been moving in powerful ways. Here’s a look back at the highlights of Summer 2025—and a glimpse at what’s coming next.

All Abilities Camp 2025: A Day of Joy and Inclusion

This year’s All Abilities Camp was a day to remember! Hosted at Rangeview High School, this one-day adaptive sports camp gave athletes with unique abilities the chance to shine on the field and court.

From soccer and track to basketball and football, the atmosphere was filled with smiles, laughter, and high-fives. We welcomed 15 incredible student-athletes who showcased not only their athletic talent but also their courage and joy.

The event was made possible thanks to a team of dedicated volunteers who poured their hearts into serving. Together, we celebrated the love of sports, the gift of community, and—most importantly— God’s love for every athlete.

Summer Nights: Staying Connected

We know summer can be a time when students drift away from spiritual community, which is why we host FCA Summer Nights.

This year, we held three incredible nights of connection, laughter, and encouragement. These evenings were designed to keep students plugged into fellowship during the break, reminding them that their walk with Jesus is not just for the school year—it’s for every season of life.

Leadership Camp: Raising Up Student Leaders

One of the most impactful events of the summer was Leadership Camp 2025.

We were honored to host 60 student-athletes from 22 different high schools across the Greater Denver area for a powerful three-day camp. Throughout the week, students were equipped to lead both on and off the field. They dove into Scripture, built lasting friendships, and grew in their understanding of what it means to be a Kingdom Laborer on their teams and campuses.

God moved mightily in their hearts, and we can’t wait to see how these young leaders live out their faith back at their schools this year.

Staff Retreat: United in Vision

Before heading into the busy fall season, our team took time away for a three-day staff retreat.

Over two nights together, we deepened relationships, prayed for direction, and dreamed big about the year ahead. The retreat was a perfect balance of strategy sessions, times of worship, shared meals, and even a little healthy competition through team challenges.

We left refreshed, united, and ready to continue the mission of reaching every coach and athlete with the Gospel.

Summer brings longer days, packed schedules, and plenty of time on the field. For many families, youth sports are in full swing—from early morning practices to weekend tournaments. It’s a season full of excitement, challenge, and opportunity. But in the midst of the hustle, it’s easy to let faith take a backseat.

As Christian parents and families involved in sports, we’re called to something more than chasing wins or building résumés. Our greatest goal isn’t to raise champions—it’s to raise disciples of Christ who live out their faith in every arena of life, including the athletic one.

Faith in the Fast Lane: The Challenge of Summer Sports

Summer sports can easily become all-consuming. Travel teams, weekend games, and weeknight practices leave little time for rest—let alone intentional spiritual growth. But it’s precisely in these busy moments that faith has the potential to grow strongest.

When we keep Jesus at the center, sports transform from a distraction into a discipleship tool.

Every practice becomes a training ground not just for skill, but for spiritual character . Every game becomes a platform—not just to compete, but to reflect Christ. And every challenge becomes a chance to grow in humility, perseverance, and dependence on God.

Four Ways to Keep Christ First in Sports This Summer

If you’re looking to intentionally disciple your children while embracing the excitement of youth athletics, here are a few simple but powerful ways to keep Christ at the center:

1. Pray Together Before and After Games

Make prayer a consistent part of your family’s sports rhythm. Gather in the car before games or pause as a family afterward to thank God, no matter the outcome. It’s a reminder that God cares more about our hearts than the scoreboard.

2. Celebrate Character Over Results

Wins and stats are temporary—but Christlike character lasts a lifetime. Teach your kids to value integrity, teamwork, and humility. Celebrate the teammate who encourages others or shows grace in defeat just as much as the one who scores the most points.

3. Model Christlike Behavior as a Parent

Your attitude in the stands speaks volumes. Whether it’s a ref’s call you disagree with or a tough loss, choose patience, encouragement, and grace. Let your behavior reflect the fruit of the Spirit—and watch how your kids take note.

4. Create a Family Sports Mission Statement

What if your family had a shared vision for why you do sports? Take time to write a mission statement grounded in Scripture—something like: "Our family uses sports to glorify God, grow in character, and share the love of Christ with others." Revisit it often and let it guide your sports decisions.

This Summer, Let Sports Be More Than a Game

Youth sports are a gift. They teach discipline, teamwork, and perseverance. But even more, they can be a platform for spiritual growth— if we’re intentional.

So this summer, don’t just chase trophies. Chase truth. Don’t just build skill. Build faith. Don’t just run the race— run it in a way that honors Christ (1 Corinthians 9:24).

How Christian Coaches Can Lead with Integrity!

Coaching is about far more than wins and losses—it’s about shaping lives . Years from now, our athletes won’t remember the exact words we said, but they will remember who we were. The most important thing we can do as coaches is to walk out our faith daily , knowing that our actions speak louder than our words.

A Legacy Beyond Trophies:

At memorial services for coaches, former players rarely talk about championships or awards. Instead, they remember the life lessons, the encouragement, and the character of their coach. Our true legacy isn’t measured in victories but in the way we love, lead, and serve those entrusted to us.

Love is the Foundation:

“We love because He first loved us.” (1 John 4:19)

Love should be the foundation of everything we do. It’s expressed in different ways—sometimes in quiet encouragement, other times in firm but fair discipline. Love isn’t just about making athletes feel good; it’s about helping them grow into their full potential, even when it requires tough conversations.

Meeting Athletes Where They Are:

Each athlete comes from a unique background , bringing different experiences, struggles, and levels of faith. Our job as coaches is to meet them where they are, guiding them with patience and understanding. True mentorship happens when we see the individual beyond the uniform and invest in their personal and spiritual growth.

The Power of Communication:

Effective coaching requires open and honest communication. Sharing our testimony can inspire athletes, but being a good listener is just as vital. Sometimes, they don’t need advice—they just need someone who will genuinely hear them . Building trust through communication creates an environment where athletes feel valued and understood .

Judge Little, Teach More:

Athletes learn more from our actions than our words. How we handle victory and defeat, how we treat opponents and officials, and how we respond under pressure all model Christ-like behavior. When we lead with integrity and humility , we teach invaluable lessons that extend far beyond the game.

Coaching is About Planting Seeds:

We may not see the immediate results of our influence, but coaching is about planting seeds of faith , character , and perseverance . One coach, when asked how his season went, wisely responded, “I’ll let you know in 20 years.” The impact of our coaching isn’t measured in a season but in the lives we help shape for years to come.

The True Goal of Coaching:

Winning games is great, but winning hearts for Christ is the real victory. When we prioritize faith, love, and character , we leave a lasting legacy that outlives the final score. As coaches, our calling is to lead by example, knowing that more is caught than taught.

1. LISTENING TO A PODCAST OR SERMON DURING A WORKOUT!

As athletes, we know the power of multitasking—why not combine physical training with spiritual growth? Listening to a sermon or a faith-based podcast during your workout can be a game changer. It allows you to strengthen both your body and your spirit at the same time. The Through the Word app is an excellent resource, offering a 10-minute podcast-style explanation of each Bible chapter, followed by a reading of the passage. It’s perfect for listening during cardio, lifting, or even while cooling down. This practice can also be great during commutes or as a part of your evening routine to reflect and refocus.

2. TAKING AND THEN REVIEWING SERMON NOTES!

In the high-pressure world of athletics, focusing during a sermon can be challenging, but taking notes is a powerful way to stay engaged. Studies show that taking notes can increase retention of information by up to 50%. For athletes and coaches, this practice is crucial for internalizing the teachings and keeping them at the forefront of your mind. A helpful practice is to review these notes the following week before attending church again. This reinforces the previous sermon’s lessons and prepares the heart and mind for the new one.

3. SETTING A DAILY SCRIPTURE GOAL!

Consistency is key—whether it’s in your training or your spiritual life. Setting a small, achievable scripture reading goal each day can keep you grounded and focused. Whether it’s one chapter or a verse that speaks to you, having a target ensures that you’re consistently engaging with God’s Word. Using Bible apps like YouVersion makes it easy to track progress and receive daily encouragement, so you never miss a day of spiritual training. For coaches, this can be a powerful example to set for your team, encouraging them to prioritize faith alongside their athletic goals.

4. PRAYER WALKS OR QUIET TIME OUTDOORS!

Athletes are often outdoors—whether on the field, track, or trail. Why not turn that time into an opportunity for prayer? Going on prayer walks or simply sitting outdoors for some quiet reflection can help you stay spiritually grounded. Whether you’re prepping mentally before a game or unwinding after a tough practice, nature provides the perfect setting for connecting with God. These moments of solitude allow you to focus on His presence, refocus your energy, and find peace in the midst of competition.

5. MAKING TIME FOR REST AND SABBATH

Rest isn’t just important for your body; it’s vital for your soul. In the grind of training, competition, working and coaching, it's easy to overlook the need for rest. But just as athletes need time to recover physically, we also need time to recover spiritually. Setting aside a specific time each week for Sabbath and rest is crucial for mental, emotional, and spiritual renewal. It’s essential for long-term success—both in athletics and in life. In the hustle and bustle of daily life, it’s easy to overlook the importance of rest. God designed us to need rest, not just physically but spiritually as well. This might include turning off work emails, spending time in nature, enjoying family, or simply resting in God’s presence.

6. SERVING OTHERS IN SMALL WAYS

Leadership in sports isn’t just about winning games—it’s about serving those around you. As an athlete or coach, you can make a big impact through simple, everyday acts of service. Whether it’s helping a teammate with a drill, encouraging a fellow coach, or doing something kind for someone on your team, these small acts reflect God’s love and can foster a positive team culture. Serving others in these quiet ways can help you stay humble and focused on the bigger picture—your purpose in Christ.

7. USING MUSIC FOR WORSHIP THROUGHOUT THE DAY

Music is a powerful motivator—why not use it to keep your heart tuned to God? Create a playlist of worship songs to listen to during your daily routines (like cooking, commuting, or cleaning). Whether you're warming up for a game, commuting to practice, or cooling down after a tough workout, listening to faith-based music can help you stay spiritually connected and keep your mind focused. It’s a great way to center yourself in the middle of a busy day and remind yourself of God’s goodness, no matter what challenges or victories you face in your journey.

New Digs, New Partnership

Before HitStreak opened a new softball and baseball training facility in Dove Valley, owner Scott Vatter had a specific vision in mind for the mezzanine space above the batting cages.

Several years ago, he started reaching out about what FCA was doing in South Denver. He’d never been involved in FCA before but wanted to join a coaches Bible study. Vatter ended up being part of a group that met at Chick-fil-A. But meeting at a restaurant wasn’t ideal. He also knew of other Bible studies and fellowship groups meeting in similar places. “I always felt like there should be a dedicated place for groups to meet, and there wasn’t,” he says.

When he saw the mezzanine of the new HitStreak building, a light bulb went on. "This is the place coaches can meet," Vatter says.

Vatter reached out to FCA again, and a unique partnership was born. When HitStreak moved into its new facility in Centennial in January, FCA staff members helped move batting cage turf and other equipment into the building. Today, FCA uses the mezzanine space for staff meetings. Plans are underway to raise funds to close off and remodel the mezzanine. The project is expected to cost $15,000.

The vision is simple: Provide a comfortable place where coaches of all sports and FCA staff can meet for huddles, encouragement, training, and planning.

“I want it to be an easy place to meet,” Vatter says. “My hope is it will become a place where coaches can encourage each other and grow spiritually. I think coaches need that connection and fellowship with other coaches.”

Founded in 2006, HitStreak offers year-round baseball and softball training, coach and player clinics, private and small group instruction, and fall team programs. Eventually Vatter said he would like to see FCA build baseball and softball teams out of HitStreak, coached by individuals trained in FCA's 360 Coach program, with a vision to honor Christ in sports. This fits into FCA’s vision to help coaches and athletes in club and league sports grow spiritually.

“It will be fun to see how all of this evolves,” Vatter says.
